NUTRITION FOR BABIES

Some of the nutrients babies need to grow and stay healthy include:

1/ Calcium - strong bones and teeth.

2/ Fat - energy, brain development, healthy skin and hair, protects against infections.

3/ Iron - blood cells, brain development.

4/ Protein and carbohydrates - energy and fuel growth.

5/ Zinc - cell grow and repair.

Babies also need the full range of vitamins.

The best way for breast-fed babies to get enough nutrients is for Mum to take a good-quality multi-nutrient supplement as well as a healthy, multi-coloured diet.

Some Food suggestions for Mum

1/ Carrots and sweet potatoes (vitamin A); green veggies, bananas and beans (B vitamins); tomatoes and strawberries (vitamin C); and cereal & grains (vitamin E).

2/ Iron-rich foods include meat, egg yolks, whole grain breads and cereals, peas, beans and chickpeas.

3/ Omega-3 foods: salmon, grass-fed meat, tofu, flaxseed & yogurt, cereal and eggs.

4/ Dairy products: cottage cheese and yogurt should be full-fat or made from whole milk.

5/Healthy fat - avocado and olive oil.

6/ Protein-packed foods, including eggs, meat, chicken, fish and tofu.

7/ Calcium-rich foods (whole milk cottage cheese) & some grains can also provide protein.
